The Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece started in 776 B.C., lasting until the end of the 4th century. Other Greek city-states, like Athens, had their own Panhellenic athletic competitions. However, the Olympics were the most important athletic and cultural contest in the Greek world for more than a millennium. Every four years, Olympia was the place for the greatest athletes from all over the Greek world in the Mediterranean – and for political writers, historians, and philosophers to expound their ideas. He will also talk about the current Olympic Games. Dr. Vallianatos earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Illinois, a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in European/Greek history, and did post-doctoral studies at Harvard. He has taught at several at colleges around the country, and authored six books and hundreds of articles in academic journals.
