September 5 – “The Napier Initiative” |

| Speakers – Joyce Yarborough and Dick Johnson
Joyce Yarborough and Dick Johnson will present a program on the remarkable Napier Initiative Program, based at Pilgrim Place. Now in its seventh year, the Napier Initiative has developed unique team-taught classes at the Claremont Colleges, enrolling college students and elders from the community to explore topics of social concern. The program also grants fellowships for students to pursue a variety of projects – of their own invention – that improve the lives of others. Joyce and Dick will share stories of the impressive achievements of students in the Napier Initiative. Joyce joined Pilgrim Place in 2006, where she is now vice president in charge of advancement. She is a graduate of Moray House College in Edinburgh. She began her career as an ESL teacher for the British Voluntary Service Overseas, working in northern Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Dick Johnson arrived at Pomona College in 1962 and since that time has rarely left Claremont. He received a PhD from Claremont Graduate School in 1971. September 12 – “A Journey to Central Asia” |

| Speaker – Barbara Rugeley
Barbara Rugeley will present a photo slideshow about her recent trip to Uzbekistan and four other countries of the former USSR. Share her journey to this part of the world, which was long closed to American tourists. Barbara earned BA and MLS degrees from the University of Oklahoma, and retired from her position as reference librarian at Citrus College in 2010. She is in four book groups and usually takes three international trips every year. She is a member of Claremont Kiwanis, League of Women Voters, and Inland Valley Storytellers. September 19 – “The L.A. County Fair and the Future of the Fairplex” |

| Speaker – Miguel Santana, President and CEO, Los Angeles County Fair Association
The L.A. County fair is a lot of fun to go to in September. The L.A. County Fair Association is a huge year-round non-profit association, which has come a long way from its early agricultural roots. President and CEO Miguel Santana is the fifth president since the fair’s beginning in 1922. Known as a problem solver, Mr. Santana was brought in to lead the strategic planning and create the long-term future of the L.A. County Fair Association and the 500-acre Fairplex in Pomona in particular. He earned a BA from Whittier College and a MA in Public Administration from Harvard. He has over 25 years experience in fiscal management and community involvement. Prior to his current work, he was a Deputy CEO for L.A. County, with oversight of the county’s social service departments, and later the City Administrative Officer for the City of Los Angeles, overseeing an $8.1 billion budget, labor negotiations, debt management and major policy issues. September 26 – “A Confluence of Instability” |

| Speaker – Bill Forti
Bill Forti will suggest that we are living in an unstable age never witnessed before in human history. The current environment is caused by a confluence of rapid technologic change, the polarization of religion and moral perceptions, regional conflict, and political, economic and financial instability. He will relate key points from what he learned from briefings at the Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs, the Air Force Institute of Technology, the Naval War College and Vandenberg Air Force Base, as well as a three-week trip to Rome, Kiev and Moscow in July and a ten-day trip to Beijing and Seoul in September.
