University Club programs are open to the public and are held Tuesdays in the Padua Room of the Hughes Community Center, 1700 Danbury Road, Claremont, California. A full buffet lunch, beginning at 11:30 AM, is available for $13.00. For those who wish to come only for coffee and dessert, the fee is $6.00. Membership applications are available at each meeting. July 1– “The Pyramid of Success

Speaker – Thomas Reyes

Thomas Reyes will talk about the Pyramid of Success, created by the legendary UCLA basketball coach
John Wooden. Mr. Reyes’ presentation includes a history of Coach Wooden’s life leading up to winning ten
national championships in college basketball, and Wooden’s philosophy of success and the qualities
required to achieve it. Tom Reyes earned degrees from USC and the University of La Verne.

July 8– “Clara Barton – the Early Years ”


Speaker – Susan Higley

Susan Higley will become this famous lady in history to give us a glimpse at the heart and mind of Clara
Barton and what made her “tick.” “Clara” will tell us about her early years, adventures, and
accomplishments prior to the onset of the Civil War. Clara is most famously known as the “Angel of the
Battlefield” during the Civil War, along with her visionary work to create the American Red Cross in

Junly 15– “Recovery from Traumatic Brain Injury”


Speaker – Celeste Palmer

Celeste Palmer, author, life coach and University Club past president, started her life over after surviving a
near-fatal car accident in 2000, which caused traumatic brain injury (TBI) and amnesia. She will talk about
writing her story for the new book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury
Injuries: 101 Stories of Hope, Healing, and Hard Work, and about the remarkable recoveries of other TBI
survivors in the book. Celeste earned degrees from Cal State Los Angeles and Claremont Graduate
University, Drucker Graduate School of Management. She is the founder of a non-profit, Bridging the Gap
– Connecting Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors.

July 22– “Great Events in the Aerospace Industry in the 20th Century”


Speaker – Dr. Robert Brodsky

“Dr. Bob” – a space pioneer with a 46-year career in spacecraft design and teaching astronautics - returns to
the University Club to tell us more about the world-changing phase of US aerospace growth, starting with
space exploration missions in the 1960’s. In addition to his work as an engineering executive and professor,
he is a lecturer and author, with degrees from Cornell University, University of New Mexico, and New York
University. Most recently he was a professor of Astronautical and Space Technology Engineering at USC,
retiring in 1996.

July 29– “East to West – Philippinos’ Dreams of Coming to America”


Speaker – Connie and Victor Zamora

Mr. and Mrs. Zamora will present a slideshow about the history of Philippinos coming to a better life in the
United States. The Zamora’s personal story and beyond, this history includes untold stories of the struggles
of Philippinos, from pre-World War II to the present, to assimilate into and contribute to their new homes in
America. Victor Zamora is a professor of computer science at Mt. SAC.
