December 3 – “The Ancient and Modern Faces of Turkey

Speaker – Gene Smith
Our talk will take us to one of the most important locations of the ancient world. On the Bosporus Strait
the worlds of Asia and Europe meet. The water route of the Bosporus ran north and south, the caravan
routes by land ran east and west, and they crossed at a wonderful location for a great city.
Constantinople of the Byzantine Empire, now Istanbul of modern Turkey, is still a very interesting place
with modern and ancient history at every turn. We will also add a look at the unique geography of
Cappadocia for a contrast to modern Istanbul. Gene Smith is immediate past president of the club and a
retired history teacher.
